Long Beach children are back in school and the Long Beach Public Library wants everyone to know that September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when parents can make sure their children have the most valuable – and cost-effective – school supply of all: a free Long Beach Public Library Card.

"Our libraries provide students with the tools they need to succeed," Mayor Bob Foster said. “A library card is one of the best and easiest ways to assist students during the school year, so let's make sure all our children have one.”

Resources at the Long Beach Public Library are available to everyone with a library card in good standing.  Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and services that support academic achievement and self-directed learning.

“Students can find exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun and resources that they can access from the library, from home and almost anywhere – all with a free library card,” said Library Director Glenda Williams. “It is for these reasons that a library card is the most important school supply of all.”

In addition to all the information, services and events the library supplies, the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library are sponsoring an essay contest as part of National Library Card Sign-Up Month.  Find out more at or
