Atlantic Avenue Street Improvement Project Set to Begin

The City of Long Beach will soon begin work on a street improvement project on Atlantic Avenue between 52nd Street and North Atlantic Place, as part of the City's efforts to invest in corridors and create vibrant commercial areas for both businesses and residents to enjoy. 

"We’re working hard to maintain and improve our streets and sidewalks," Mayor Bob Foster said. “This investment in Atlantic Avenue will benefit us for years to come.”

The rehabilitation will include constructing cement concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks; replacing and overlaying asphalt concrete pavement; and furnishing and installing pavement markers, markings, and traffic striping. New stormwater catch basins with screens will prevent trash from entering storm drains. Current medians will be repaired, and new medians, landscaping, irrigation and stamped concrete crosswalks will be installed. 

“Our Uptown Renaissance continues with this vital project along Atlantic Avenue,” said Councilmember Steven Neal, who represents the 9th District. “This Complete Streets project transforms the business environment and will have ripple effects on everyone in the area." 

A new raised median will be installed between Harding Street and Aloha Drive, and existing medians between 52nd and 56th Streets and 59th Street and Harding Street will be improved with new trees, landscaping and irrigation.

“I am pleased that we are moving forward on this significant project,” said Councilmember Al Austin, who represents the 8th District. “Good streets are good for residents, businesses and the entire community.” 

The street will be resurfaced with asphalt containing up to 15 percent recycled material, as well as recycled rubber from old tires. One of the environmental benefits associated with this project is that tires will be recycled through the use of rubberized asphalt. It is estimated that up to 2,270 tires will be recycled.

In addition, all of the old asphalt material to be removed under this contract will be recycled into new asphalt or utilized as base material on other street projects. Road base material used on the project will come from recycled concrete, rock, sand, and asphalt, and all concrete work will include recycled waste ash, diverting these materials from our landfills.

Businesses will remain open during construction, and parking is available in many nearby parking structures and lots. Traffic controls will be in place to provide safety for motorists and workers.

Funding for this $3.2 million project comes from Proposition C, and from bond proceeds from the former Long Beach Redevelopment Agency. 

The work is scheduled to be completed by approximately October 2014, barring any weather delays.

Plans also are being developed for a related project to repair sidewalks and install new lighting, bike racks and bus stops along Atlantic Avenue between 56th and 59th streets.
