The Civil Service Commission announced today the appointment of Kandice Taylor-Sherwood as Director of Civil Service, effective mid-June, 2014. Ms. Taylor-Sherwood has 12 years of professional experience in the field of Human Resources, and currently is the Deputy Director of Human Resources for the City of Anaheim.
"Kandice Taylor-Sherwood exemplifies the type of leadership we were looking for in a new Civil Service Director," said Larry Keller, President of the Civil Service Commission. “She has demonstrated the ability to manage a complex set of responsibilities over the course of her career, and we are pleased to welcome her aboard to this very important position.”
Previously in her career, Ms. Taylor-Sherwood has served as Principal Human Resource Analyst and Senior Human Resource Development Specialist for the City of Anaheim, and as a Principal and Senior Human Resource Specialist for the Los Angeles Unified School District. She also has experience as a part-time instructor at California State University, Long Beach.
Ms. Taylor-Sherwood holds a master's degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Long Beach.
”I am delighted to be appointed the next Director of Civil Service, and will do everything in my power to foster a culture of customer service and enhance coordination and communication with all City Departments so they can hire the most qualified candidates in a timely manner,” Ms. Taylor-Sherwood said.
Ms. Taylor-Sherwood is replacing Mario Beas, who retired in December 2013.
The Civil Service Department recruits and screens job applicants, to ensure that the City of Long Beach can select from among the most-qualified candidates when hiring or promoting employees. In addition, the Civil Service Department serves as the support staff for the Long Beach Civil Service Commission
