Vice Mayor Richardson's Bio
Vice Mayor Rex Richardson was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2014 to represent the neighborhoods of North Long Beach in District 9, becoming the youngest in the City's history to have ever served in that role. Continuing to break barriers, in July 2016 Rex Richardson was elected Vice Mayor of the City of Long Beach by the City Council, making him the youngest to serve as Vice Mayor in the city’s history. His history in Long Beach is grounded in advocating for our most vulnerable residents by creating environments where everyone has a seat at the table and an opportunity to thrive.
Since taking office, Vice Mayor Richardson is leading North Long Beach on a “Roadmap to its Renaissance” by placing a focus on economic and community revitalization, with the construction of the new Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library, infrastructure investment, retail development, the Creative Corridor Mural Arts Project, and the Empower Uptown Participatory Budgeting process.
City-wide, Vice Mayor Richardson has worked to shift the culture of city hall by embracing a systemic and collaborative approach to problem solving. Richardson championed the creation of the Long Beach Office of Equity, to help address the economic and health disparities affecting Long Beach neighborhoods, and spearheaded a number of innovative initiatives that provide more opportunities to disconnected youth, including the Long Beach My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, and the PATH Young Adult Diversion program.
Most recently, Vice Mayor Richardson launched #EveryoneIn, an initiative designed to create a local economy that includes and benefits every Long Beach resident. #EveryoneIn will create more economic opportunities for small business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and will ensure every community, every resident, and every business is included in our city’s prosperity.
Regionally, Richardson serves as Chair of the Community, Economic, and Human Development Committee at Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Locally, Richardson is chair of the Long Beach Housing Authority as well as the Federal Legislation Committee for the Long Beach City Council.
Vice Mayor Richardson, his wife Nina, and daughters Alina and Mila are proud residents of North Long Beach.
