If you change your car’s oil yourself, finish the job right by recycling your used oil and oil filter. Used oil can contain such compounds as lead, magnesium, copper, zinc, chromium, arsenic, chlorides and cadmium. It is illegal to dump it into a storm drain or in your trash—motor oil poured down drains ends up in ground and surface waters. According to federal reports, used motor oil accounts for over 40 percent of the oil pollution of our nation’s harbors and waterways.
By recycling your used motor oil and filters every time they’re changed, you help keep our oceans clean, our beaches safe, and our families healthy. By recycling motor oil, you’re also providing a source of oil that helps conserve natural resources. Learn more about re-refined motor oil. Recycling is the safest way to dispose of used motor oil and filters.
There are two ways Long Beach residents can recycle used motor oil and filters:
Drop used oil/filters off at a local, certified used oil collection center.
Request a pick-up of your oil/filters, and place NEXT to your purple recycling cart.

Call (800) 774-0222, or use the online form below, to request free containers and bags, and to schedule a used motor oil/filter pickup.
Motor oil and filters will be collected only after you have requested a pickup. Your request must be received before 4:00 p.m. the weekday before your recycling collection day. Requests made after that time will be scheduled for your collection day a week later. On your scheduled used oil collection day, place motor oil and filters two feet away from your recycling cart (NOT inside the cart). Used motor oil and filters MUST be in the containers provided for oil collection. Do not leave used motor oil or filters out at the curb unless you have requested a pickup.
