From Field to Fabulous – El Dorado Nature Center Celebrates 40 Years
Event date: September 26
On September 26 2009, Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine’s El Dorado Nature Center will celebrate 40 years of Environmental Excellence. Once a calico bean field, El Dorado Nature Center remains one of the few undeveloped areas of a former ranch. What was once farmland has turned into a center of vision and hope for the future of environmental education for the community. The celebration begins at 6 p.m. at the Nature Center, located at 7550 East Spring Street in Long Beach. Sponsored by Partners of Parks and Friends of El Dorado Nature Center, tickets are still available for the event for $50. Included in the ticket price is a one-year membership to Friends of El Dorado Nature Center at the Butterfly Level that includes the semiannual newsletter, entrance to our Annual California Native Plant Sale during the Friends preview, and invitations to our volunteer enrichments and potlucks.
Through the Nature Center, community members, students and neighboring cities have experienced the value of urban nature and gained the knowledge needed to improve and maintain our local and global environment.
Since its inception, El Dorado Nature Center has been a refuge where both people and wildlife can escape our urbanized environment. It provides people an opportunity to reconnect with nature’s rhythms and wildlife and escape from the concrete, steel, and asphalt that makes up the city.
Serving over 140,000 visitors a year, the Nature Center has become dependant on alternate means of support due to the city’s and state’s fiscal crises. The 40th Anniversary Celebration will not only thank the community for their support over the past 40 years, but also help to facilitate new ways of funding for the next 40 years.
Space is limited for the celebration and tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis. Adults only for the celebration please - no one under the age of 18 will be admitted. Tickets must be purchased by September 11 at the Nature Center, or by phone. Please call Luisa Hernandez at (562) 570-4935 to reserve your spot.
