As you have
probably read in the local news, Mercedes-Benz USA has signed an agreement to
lease over 1 million square feet of the former Boeing 717 manufacturing plant
in Long Beach. This is incredibly welcome news. The Boeing facility has been
empty for 7 years, and is visible from Lakewood Blvd and around Long Beach City
This lease is the largest infill industrial lease in LA County in the last 25
years. These type of new manufacturing investments are rare, and we are
fortunate that Mercedes-Benz USA has selected Long Beach as they expand their
operations. The facility is ideal because of its proximity to both the Port of
Long Beach and the Airport. In addition, the development occurring at Douglas
Park across the street will create incredible synergy with light industrial
office space and a hotel being built.
I had an opportunity to meet with members of the Mercedes-Benz USA team a year
ago - they were impressed with our city then, and clearly they continue to be
excited about the new partnership. The Sares-Regis Group who owns the land,
CBRE who represents them, and Mayor Foster and our city team did great work
closing this deal.
The impact to the local economy is a game changer.
As the national and state economies continue to turn around, we can expect more
great news coming our way. Long Beach is prepared to take advantage of every
opportunity to create new jobs, and welcome new corporations and businesses.
