‘Activate Uptown’ Block Party Coming to Long Beach on October 1
Kerry Gerot
Public Affairs Officer

Uptown will be hopping on Saturday, October 1, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, for Activate Uptown, a free, open-streets block party along Artesia Boulevard between Atlantic and Orange Avenues, with live music, activities, food, crafts, giveaways and more.

“I invite the community to bring family and friends and meet your neighbors at Activate Uptown,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Come and enjoy music, family-friendly activities, and more at the Activate Uptown festival as you bike, walk, skate or play in North Long Beach.”

Artesia Boulevard will be open to people walking, biking, and playing in the street, and closed to vehicular traffic. Myrtle Avenue between Artesia Boulevard and Harding Street will showcase a reimagined streetscape with temporary features (including a bike boulevard and roundabout) that make walking, bicycling and skating easier, safer and more enjoyable. Myrtle Avenue will remain open to local traffic.

“There’s something for everyone at Activate Uptown,” said Vice Mayor Rex Richardson. ”We are planning a variety of exhibits and attractions highlighting active transportation and the Uptown Renaissance, along with an amazing selection of headlining and local artists.”

In addition, Vice Mayor Richardson will host the second annual Village Fest at the corner of Artesia Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue. Village Fest is a free concert benefiting the North Long Beach Education Fund. Performers include:

The Pharcyde, 90's alternative hip-hop pioneers
MC Supernatural, Guinness World Record Longest Freestyle Artist
Bootleg Orchestra, Long Beach-based neo-soul/electronica collective
Vibrant Heights, Los Angeles-based reggae group

Other family friendly activities include a live mural installation, a youth basketball tournament, raffles, and more. Free bike valet will be available. More entertainers and activities will be announced shortly.

Activate Uptown is sponsored by the Office of Vice Mayor Rex Richardson, SCAG’s Go Human Campaign, Clean Transportation Funding - MSRC, and The California Endowment.
