City of Long Beach Employee Stevaughn Matthews Succumbed to Injuries Suffered Last Week

On Thursday morning, September 1, 2016, a City of Long Beach Employee was injured in a workplace accident at the Fleet Services Building, 2600 Temple Avenue. The employee, Stevaughn Matthews, was working on a trailer when the accident occurred.

Mr. Matthews was transported in critical condition to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center for treatment. On Monday, September 5, 2016 Mr. Matthews succumbed to his injuries.

Mr. Matthews was a Garage Services Attendant assigned to the Department of Financial Management Fleet Services Bureau. He was 28, and had worked for the City since February 2016.

Mr. Matthews was very well liked, and his presence will be greatly missed by his coworkers at the Fleet Services Bureau. City Officials have expressed their deepest condolences to his family.

Counselors with the City's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) are providing support and assistance to employees at the worksite.

The City’s Safety Office, in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office, is continuing to investigate the accident along with the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA).
