The public is invited to share their thoughts for ensuring more affordable and workforce housing within Long Beach, during a City Council Study Session on Tuesday, February 21, at 5:00 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 333 West Ocean Boulevard.
The City and The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC) have made significant progress in developing quality, affordable housing in Long Beach. Over the past 10 years, $543 million has been invested in the City to create 1,778 new affordable units, preserve 2,093 existing units, and provide 367 silent second mortgages to low- and moderate-income first-time homebuyers.
Building on this significant progress, the City strives to continue expanding housing opportunities that meet the diverse needs of the community. The Study Session will feature a presentation of existing and future affordable housing activities, and discuss strategies for encouraging and funding more affordable and workforce housing opportunities within the City. A draft report outlining the City’s housing efforts, Revenue Tools and Incentives for the Production of Affordable and Workforce Housing, will also be presented for community input.
The final report will incorporate input from the Study Session and will be presented to the Mayor and City Council at a later date. No formal action will be taken by the City Council at the Study Session.
In February 2016, Mayor Garcia appointed a 10-member Study Group, consisting of residents, City staff, housing advocates, developers, and business leaders, to discuss opportunities for strengthening the City’s supply of affordable and workforce housing. The Study Group has met regularly for the past year, and will provide ideas and recommendations for providing affordable housing opportunities in Long Beach.
