Grand Opening Celebration Planned for MacArthur Park Playground, Renovated Homeland Cultural Center
The public is invited to attend the Grand Opening Celebration for the new MacArthur Park Playground and the renovated Homeland Cultural Center, both located at 1321 Anaheim Street, on Saturday, March 26, 2016, at 10:00 am.
“MacArthur Park and the Homeland Cultural Center are so popular with kids and families, and these enhancements will support the community in being even more active and connected to culture and history,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.
The playground includes equipment for both young and older children, with swings, a climber, and the ability to slide and twirl. The playground’s modern, multicolored theme was chosen to symbolize the vibrant multicultural neighborhood surrounding the park.
“I am really excited about the opening of this new playground and the revitalization of MacArthur Park. It’s a project that I have been working on since last summer,” said Councilmember Dee Andrews. “This park is at the heart of the Anaheim Corridor and a hub for many diverse cultures to gather. It is a place for kids and families to play, as well as the home to the award-winning Homeland Cultural Center, where people of all ages and backgrounds experience art and share ethnic traditions.”
Homeland Cultural Center programs are very popular, and include urban and traditional arts, poetry readings, theater presentations, dance and music performances, and cultural celebrations. The renovation included new ceilings, floors, paint, equipment and lighting, along with upgrades to the restrooms, old library room, kitchen, music area and social hall.
The playground and facility improvements were made possible by $553,050 from the California Department of Housing and Community Development Housing Related Parks Grant, as well as $13,300 in one-time infrastructure funds from the Office of Councilmember Andrews.
