Long Beach Fire Academy Begins
Jake Heflin, Firefighter/Paramedic/PIO

The Long Beach Fire Department is proud to introduce Academy Class 2014A.  After nearly a year of extensive testing and evaluation, 28 highly qualified recruits have been selected to begin the 20-week fire academy on October 6, 2014.  The selected recruits come to the City of Long Beach with diverse professional backgrounds and life experiences, and all are dedicated to completing the rigorous academy and beginning a career of service to the residents, visitors and businesses of Long Beach.

"It is an exciting day to announce the new Fire Academy Class," said Mayor Robert Garcia.  “With this class, Long Beach will have incredibly qualified recruits who represent our community.  It is our hope that they will thrive in this organization for many years to come.”
"We are very pleased with the caliber of these new recruits.  We have truly found the best of the best throughout the recruitment process.  Each recruit possesses diverse skill sets that will serve Long Beach for years to come.  Many of the recruits are multi-lingual, including Spanish, Khmer, Mandarin-Chinese and Korean,” said Mike DuRee, Fire Chief of the Long Beach Fire Department.

In addition to diverse professional backgrounds, Class 2014A is also reflective of the Long Beach community.  The class includes Latinos, African-Americans, Cambodian-Americans, Korean-Americans, Chinese-Americans, women, military veterans, and recruits from other backgrounds, demonstrating the City's commitment to a diverse workforce.

The 20-week academy will begin on October 6 at the Long Beach Fire Regional Training Center and will be led by a cadre of veteran Long Beach Fire personnel.  The Basic Fire Academy will focus on emergency medical training, fire suppression, and the many other disciplines that are requisites for the job of a Firefighter in the City of Long Beach.  Each recruit is expected to learn these essential skills and must maintain proficiency while providing the best level of service to our community.  Please join the men and women of the Long Beach Fire Department in welcoming this new class of Fire Recruits as they begin their journey of service to our City.
