Long Beach Fire Department Recruit Academy Graduation on Saturday February 21 2015
The Long Beach Fire Department is proud to announce that Basic Fire Recruit Academy Class 2014A is graduating on Saturday, February 21, 2015. After 20 weeks of extensive testing and evaluation, 20 highly qualified recruits will enter the ranks of firefighters for the Long Beach Fire Department.
The Fire academy began on October 6, 2014. After months of extensive classroom and manipulative training, these graduates will have completed a rigorous regime that included fire ground operations, ladder evolutions, hose lays, auto extrication, rescue systems, firefighting, truck company operations, and ventilation practices. In addition, all graduates have successfully been certified as Emergency Medical Technicians through the National Registry.
The graduating recruit Firefighters from Class 2014A come to the City of Long Beach with a variety of professional backgrounds and life experiences. They have successfully met the challenge and excelled in learning the requirements of their new job. These new firefighters bring a passion to their new profession and serving the residents, visitors and businesses of Long Beach.
"It is exciting to celebrate the achievement of these firefighters as they assume their new role in our community," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "With this class, the Long Beach Fire Department will add incredibly qualified firefighters who represent the best our City has to offer. It is our hope that they will thrive in this organization for many years to come."
"We are very pleased with the caliber of these new firefighters. Each individual possesses skill sets that will contribute to the overall success of our Department and will serve Long Beach for years to come,” noted Mike DuRee, Fire Chief of the Long Beach Fire Department.
Class 2014A is reflective of the Long Beach community, and includes Latinos, African-Americans, Cambodian-Americans, women, military veterans, and firefighters from other backgrounds.
The 20-week academy will conclude this Saturday with a spectacular graduation ceremony at the Long Beach Fire Regional Training Center located at 2249 Argonne Avenue in Long Beach. The ceremony will include various demonstrations of the newly acquired skills that these new firefighters have mastered. In addition, there will be static displays of antique and modern fire department apparatus. The event starts at 11:00 AM and is scheduled to conclude at 2:00 PM.
