The City of Long Beach is proud to recognize the 37th annual Building Safety Month (BSM) alongside the International Code Council (ICC) and its 63,000 members worldwide. The BSM campaign aims to improve public safety by increasing awareness to help individuals, families, and businesses learn what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.

“Long Beach is proud to take part in this important and informational awareness campaign,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Building Safety Month is an opportunity for us to recognize the critical role that our Building Team plays in keeping us safe at home, at work, and in the City.”

The campaign promotes the need for the adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient code enforcement system, and a well-trained, professional workforce to ensure public safety.

The fourth week of BSM, kicking off today, is dedicated to investment in technology for safety, energy, and water efficiency.

“Long Beach has implemented electronic plan checking, streamlined various permitting processes, and adopted the 2016 California Building Standards Code, in recognition of the significant need for advancing technology that enhances safety and efficiency,” said Long Beach Building Official David Khorram.

In March 2017, David Khorram became the first Long Beach building official elected to serve as the California Building Officials (CALBO) president. David will guide the organization in its mission to promote public health and safety Statewide. Last year, the Building and Safety Bureau staff provided more than 51,500 inspections, conducted nearly 5000 engineering plan checks, and served over 59,400 customers at the Development Permit Center.

BSM, founded by the ICC in 1980, is dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The ICC develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools.
