Long Beach TV Wins Social Media Citizen Engagement Award

Long Beach TV (LBTV), the City’s award-winning television channel, and the Technology & Innovation Department were recognized in the “Most Innovative Use of Social Media/Citizen Engagement” category of the 2016 Best of California Awards for their video-rich Social Media, by e.Republic’s Center for Digital Government. The award was distributed Thursday at the California Technology Forum in Sacramento, California.

“We’re very proud of the way we are using social media to engage with the community,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “We are making it fun, easy and informative to connect with residents on a daily basis.”

Nineteen City Departments have active Facebook pages where videos are regularly posted, and the City has 12 different YouTube channels that residents access to get news and information about current services and programs. To support the development of this content, LBTV began producing short, 15-second to 2-minute i-Clip videos to embed in these social media platforms. Cross-promoting these videos across multiple platforms (and among the City’s Facebook pages and websites) has led to increased viewership, and a more informed, engaged community. For example, the i-Clip for the new Downtown Fitness Loop was recently viewed more than 6,800 times on the City’s Facebook page, and shared 59 times.

"These i-Clips have improved our social outreach, especially because people are much more likely to view information in video format,” said Bryan Sastokas, Chief Information Officer and Director of Technology & Innovation. “By using our short i-Clips we are creating a more immersive social media outreach for our community."

i-Clips also refer viewers to to learn more about the City of Long Beach, which also helps increase the number of visitors to the City’s website.
