The City of Long Beach is in the final stages of updating its General Plan, and the public is invited to provide input on the City’s vision for future land use and urban design by attending an Open House on Wednesday, November 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, at the First Congregational Church of Long Beach, 241 Cedar Ave.
“The General Plan update is the culmination of an extensive planning and outreach effort,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “This crucial initiative will ensure future growth respects the historical significance of Long Beach while leaving a legacy for the City and region.”
The Land Use Element (LUE) and Urban Design Element (UDE) Open House will provide the community and local stakeholders with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed update, provide important feedback on the draft plans, and discuss the next steps for adopting the General Plan update. No formal action will be taken at this event. Free validated parking will be available in the Broadway Parking Structure
The General Plan LUE is the roadmap to the City's future, outlining allowable land uses, building types, and heights. The proposed update to the LUE will replace the current 1989 document, and provide greater flexibility and connectivity between existing communities by establishing the concept of PlaceTypes, which distributes the City into distinct neighborhoods to allow for a mix of compatible land uses.
The UDE looks at how people and places interact with the public realm. The UDE would be a new element of the City’s General Plan meant to shape the urban environment by preserving the character of the existing neighborhoods while allowing for the continued evolution and improvements of the City in areas targeted for development.
The Open House builds on nearly a decade of planning and public outreach efforts, consisting of community meetings, scoping meetings, and Planning Commission Study Sessions. The proposed update will reflect the values of the community and set forth goals, policies, and standards for guiding the future vision of the City. This update is essential to enhancing the City’s urban environment, and will have a major impact on housing availability, mobility, and economic vitality in Long Beach.
