Recreation Park Volleyball Court Grand Opening Celebration Planned
Jane Grobaty

The public is invited to attend a Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Volleyball Court at Recreation Park on Saturday, June 4 at 1:30 pm. The court is located between Park Avenue and the Band Shell, north of 7th Street and south of Federation Drive.

“Residents will love the opportunity to play on the new sand volleyball court, located near picnic sites in beautiful Recreation Park,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “These types of projects support Long Beach’s livability goals and are another reason why our City is a great place to live, work and play.”

The new court replaces a dilapidated volleyball court area in the park where volleyball play is popular. The sand volleyball court is larger than the existing court, consistent with standard sand court specifications. New drainage features, new poles and netting are also installed. A sand court edge was created with soft material instead of concrete to make sand court play safer and more pleasant, and to more seamlessly transition to the surrounding landscape.

“Recreation Park is known for its many sports facilities from the fly casting pond, lawn bowling greens, Billie Jean King Tennis Center, Joe Rodgers Softball Stadium, Blair Field and two golf courses,” said Councilwoman Suzie Price. “I am excited that this new volleyball court will add to the amenities for residents who want a fun way to stay active.”

The approximately $45,000 project was funded by one-time Parks, Playgrounds and Library infrastructure funds that the City Council allocated in Fiscal Year 2014.
