CalRecycle - Rubberized Asphalt Project
The City of Long Beach acknowledges the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) for helping to fund and offset the cost to install rubberized asphalt concrete surface pavement during the rehabilitation of streets in the City of Long Beach.
CalRecycle provides the Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (RAC) Grant Program to promote markets for recycled-content surfacing products derived from waste tires generated in California and decrease the adverse environmental impacts created by unlawful disposal and stockpiling of waste tires. RAC is a proven road paving material that has been used in California since the 1970's. It is made by blending ground tire rubber with asphalt binder which is then mixed with conventional aggregate materials.
Under the Pavement Grant Program, the Targeted RAC Incentive Grant and RAC Chip Seal Grant have been consolidated into one grant with two types of projects - RAC and Chip Seal projects. In 2011, CalRecycle awarded $250,000 in RAC grant funds to the City of Long Beach for rehabilitation of streets in Long Beach. In January 2014, the City of Long Beach in association with CalRecycle, completed the rehabilitation work on six street projects which included recycling a total of 40,656 waste tires into the roadway pavement on the following streets.
- ATHERTON STREET between Bellflower Blvd. and Palo Verde Ave.
- ATLANTIC AVENUE between 33rd St. and Bixby Road
- CARSON STREET between Atlantic Ave. and Orange Ave.
- WOODRUFF AVENUE between Willow St. and Spring St.
- WOODRUFF AVENUE between Conant St. and Carson St.
- STEARNS STREET between Bellflower Blvd. and Palo Verde Ave.
