The current Bay Shore Neighborhood Library building first opened in Belmont Shore on April 24, 1959. Since then, the City of Long Beach has maintained the building to promote knowledge, community and lifelong learning. In 2023 and 2024, the Bay Shore Library Project revitalized the building and introduced key accessibility and sustainability features. The upgrades were completed in two phases:
Phase 1: Energy Efficient Window Upgrades
- Sustainability: Library windows were replaced with insulated windows to reduce the energy needed to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
Phase 2: Exterior Building Improvements
- Improved accessibility: Automatic doors installed at the main entrances and a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant ramp at the main entrance on Bay Shore Ave. ensure all visitors can access the library.
- Beautification: Exterior repainting, siding replacements, trellis improvements and new landscaping promote a welcoming neighborhood space.
- Energy efficiency: Existing exterior lighting was replaced with LED fixtures to minimize energy consumption.

Crews have since finished most of the Phase two improvements, including concrete work for the new accessible entrance ramp. The contractor is completing final touches as they work with the City’s Community Development Department on building inspections.
