Travel Ban Resolution

On June 18, 2019, City Council moved to institute a travel ban to Georgia and Alabama, states that passed legislation to ban abortions if a doctor can detect a heartbeat and ban abortions at any stage of pregnancy, respectively. The Council item requested the City Attorney prepare a resolution denouncing Georgia and Alabama’s legislation and suspending official City travel to Georgia, Alabama, and any state that adopts similar heartbeat legislation, until the law is revoked, amended, or struck down by the courts.

On February 11, 2025, Long Beach City Council reaffirmed Resolution NO. 19-0111 and amended it to clarify that hiring authorities have the authority to travel to banned states if there is a critical City operational need.

The Council action further directed staff to establish a website tracking all the states to which travel would be banned under this policy. Based on the current Resolution, the following states are included in the City's travel ban: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
