Long Beach’s dream of becoming a hotbed of entrepreneurial talent may slowly be inching toward reality.
The city kicked off the Long Beach Accelerator, a startup incubator program formed as a partnership between the city, Cal State Long Beach and the investment company Sunstone Management, with an investor reception Tuesday, Aug. 27.
About 30 potential funders for the project crowded into the Beacon Ballroom at the downtown Hyatt Regency, where city officials and Long Beach Accelerator board members touted their aspirations for the nascent incubator.
“This community was a job center for generations, between the Navy and McDonnell Douglas,” Mayor Robert Garcia’s chief of staff Mark Taylor said. “This was the birthplace of the modern commercial aircraft engineer. This was a place that people commuted to from all around the region to work.”
The Long Beach Accelerator taking off, Taylor said, could mark a new entry in that history, with the city’s birth as a technology job center.
