Shortly before 5 pm, Long Beach Fire Units responded to a structure fire on the 6500 Block of Brayton Ave.  First arriving units reported heavy fire and smoke coming from two adjacent houses and a detached garage.  A 2nd Alarm assignment was dispatched for additional manpower to combat the blaze.  Both homes were occupied at the time and all residents escaped without injury.  A dog was rescued from the house next door by firefighters.  There was extensive damage to both homes and detached garage. Once the fire had been extinguished, lengthy salvage and overhaul operations ensued.   One firefighter was injured battling the blaze and was transported with minor injuries to an area hospital.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
