Pedestrian Refuge Islands
A pedestrian refuge or safety island reduces a pedestrian’s exposure time in an intersection. These islands are typically applied at locations where traffic speeds and volumes make crossing prohibitive, or where three or more lanes of traffic make pedestrians feel exposed or unsafe in the intersection.
