This May, the City of Long Beach will celebrate National Bike Month, continuing an annual tradition. All month long, the City will encourage Long Beach residents to get out and ride a bike through free community events and ongoing social media challenges. These events include a 30-mile Tour of Long Beach community bike ride and the latest installment of the popular Beach Streets open streets event in Downtown.
Every year, communities across the United States celebrate Bike Month as an opportunity to showcase the benefits of bicycling and to encourage more people to incorporate bicycling into their daily lives.
Community members can participate in National Bike Month by attending one of four main events. More information can be found here.
- “Recycle Your Bicycle” on May 6 allows residents to sustainably dispose of old bicycles by donating them to charity to be refurbished or used for parts.
- The City will host a bicycle community meeting on May 11 to discuss how Long Beach builds new bicycle infrastructure and share details on projects.
- Beach Streets returns to Downtown on May 20, creating open streets for people to enjoy active recreation.
- And the month will culminate in the Tour of Long Beach, a 30-mile City-led community bike ride on May 28, a reprise of one of last year’s most popular events. More details on each of these events can be found below.
In addition to these scheduled events, residents are also encouraged to follow along with GoActiveLB’s Bike Month Challenge. Whether by riding to the grocery store, taking a friend out on a ride, trying out an e-bike, performing maintenance on a bike, or doing something else bike-related, everyone can challenge themselves to make bikes a bit more a part of their lives.
Keep track of the ongoing challenges Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and remember to tag us at @goactivelb to share your challenge accomplishments all month long!
