New Separated Bike Lanes Debut on Del Amo Blvd

The City of Long Beach recently debuted its first concrete-separated bike lane along Del Amo Boulevard. Bicyclists can now ride the new half-mile connection between Atlantic and Orange Avenues. The new design improves upon the segment’s previous bike lanes and creates more comfortable riding conditions by adding more space and separation from cars.

In addition to improving access to destinations such as Barton Elementary School and Scherer Park, the new Del Amo Blvd. separated bike lanes strengthen the connectivity of Long Beach’s overall bike network. Orange and Atlantic Avenues are two of the city’s main north-south bike corridors, and the Del Amo Blvd. project ensures a quality connection that enhances these streets’ utility.

Separated bike lanes provide more rider comfort and encourage confident riding for people of all ages. The wider design of these bike lanes encourages more social, side-by-side riding. The design also allows enough space for regular street sweeper access, improving maintenance regularity and reducing bike lane debris.

The City minimized costs and disruption to the area by including these bike lane improvements in existing repaving plans for Del Amo Blvd. Future scheduled road maintenance can provide further opportunities for similar projects around the city. The Del Amo Blvd. project offers a showcase for design and implementation for bike infrastructure on Long Beach’s arterial streets.
