California Eviction Moratorium Extended

Current State law, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Jan. 29, 2021, extends the statewide eviction moratorium, which includes Long Beach, through June 30, 2021.  The legislation provides eviction and foreclosure protection for many residential tenants and property owner suffering from economic hardship due to COVID-19.

California Eviction Moratorium

Previous State law provided eviction and foreclosure protections for many residential tenants and property owners suffering from economic hardship due to COVID-19.  Under the legislation, no tenant could be evicted before Feb. 1, 2021 as a result of rent owed due to a COVID-19 related hardship accrued between March 4 – Aug. 31, 2020, if the tenant provided a declaration of hardship according to the legislation’s timelines.

Program Updates

The application period for the COVID-19 LB CARES Emergency Rental Assistance Program has closed. The Program materials became available online on June 29, 2020, and the last day for the submittal of applications, by postal mail, was July 27, 2020.

The City received more than 2,400 applications. However, based on funding availability, staff is currently processing only 1,770 that were selected through a lottery system.

If any of those selected do not fully meet the program qualifications, then from the remaining applications that were received additional ones will be selected by lottery and processed.

The approval and send out of payments, which will go directly and only to property owners or landlords, is expected to begin in the fall.
