The City Council adopted the Strategic Improvement Plan (SIP) for the LGBTQ+ Cultural District on May 21, 2024. The SIP reflects extensive community outreach and advisory input, identifying the corridor’s cultural and historical significance and priority public improvements.

The project has moved from the Community Development Bureau to the Department of Public Works for implementation. Public Works will deliver priority improvements in phases as funding becomes available. The first phase will focus on Broadway between Hermosa and Junipero Avenues. These initial improvements will establish a foundation for future enhancements along the full corridor.

• Support and strengthen local LGBTQ+ businesses and institutions.
• Improve and activate public spaces so residents and visitors spend more time in the corridor.
• Promote long‑term sustainability and resilience for the neighborhood.

• Art murals and public art installations
• Colorful benches, bike racks, and street furnishings
• New street trees and streetscape enhancements

The community engagement process was grounded in uplifting the voices of the LGBTQ+ community, educating and providing resources to the businesses along the corridor. Community outreach and engagement was a core component for establishing a collaborative Vision Plan. The Broadway Corridor has historical significance for the people who advocated for and created space for the LGBTQ+ community to flourish. The robust community engagement effort allowed the City to listen to community members on what they value the most in the new cultural district with a focus on the community that it strives to serve.
