Community Development

The City of Long Beach is exploring a new Zoning Code Update that will help shape the regulation of parking requirements for changes of use with nonconforming parking in older business buildings (constructed 10 years ago or more). As a result of the pandemic and past research on vacant storefronts, there is a need for relief in parking requirements for businesses. The Zoning Code Amendment could help assist with aiding business in occupying vacant storefronts to reduce blight and adverse impacts on the community.

In May 2019, the City Council directed Staff to address policies related to vacant storefronts. In response to that request, parking requirements were identified as a barrier to filling vacancies. On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, City Staff will be holding a community meeting to receive input to complete a draft Zoning Code Amendment for review by City Council.
