GAYTONIA APARTMENTS

gaytonia

Architect: Reginald Freemont Inwood

George Gayton was an owner-contractor who built the Belmont Theater in Belmont Shore as well as the apartment hotel he named for himself in 1930. It catered to Naval officers stationed in Long Beach. The design is a highly picturesque version of Norman Revival, with turrets, crenelations, pointed arches and pseudo-half-timbering. The interior lobby captures a medieval ambience. It relates to other Chateauesque designs in Long Beach such as the Villa Riviera and the Pacific Coast Club. The vintage rooftop neon sign still survives.
