Phase II Terminal Area Improvements

Long Beach Airport's Modernization Program continues, as we launch our second phase of improvements. Completed in 2012, Phase I of the Airport Modernization Program included a new passenger concourse, new parking structure, and improvements to Parking Structure A.

Phase II makes additional improvements to the Airport to enhance the level of service for passengers and visitors, including mechanical and structural improvements to the Airport's 1941 terminal building. Upon completion, the improvements will substantially improve the functional flow from curb to gate.

Swinerton Builders was awarded the design-build contract for Long Beach Airport's Phase II Terminal Improvements. On February 11, 2020, Long Beach City Council gave unanimous approval to amend the contract to fund Phase II construction. The contract, valued at $80 million, is divided into phases which include design, pre-construction, and construction.

The design and construction of six projects in Phase II, anticipated to begin in 2020 and continue through 2022, include:
• Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS)
• Baggage Claim Area Improvements
• Ticketing Facilities
• Terminal Renovation Improvements
• Rental Car Customer Service Improvements
• Meeter and Greeter Plaza

Future improvements will include:
• Rental car ready-return-lot
• Ground Transportation Center
• Terminal roadway improvements
