Adult Literacy Services
Improve your skills in reading, writing, and speaking English! The Library offers one-on-one tutoring and programs to help you develop your skills.
The adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) services are completely free and open to adults at any skill level.

The Adult Literacy Services program offers different ways to help you achieve your goals.
- One-on-one Tutoring: Get paired with a tutor who will help you with your reading and writing skills. Gain literacy skills to succeed at work, home, in your community, and for lifelong learning.
- Group Learning: Join classes, workshops, and other programs to improve your skills with peers. Visit the Adult and Family Literacy Calendar to see upcoming programs.
To become a volunteer, fill out the volunteer interest form.
Adult literacy volunteers are critical to the Library's services. Volunteers can support various programs across Long Beach Public Library locations. We provide training, and there's no experience required. Help change someone’s life by becoming an adult literacy volunteer!
- One-on-one Tutoring: Meet weekly with a learner to provide personalized support toward their literacy goals. Each tutoring session must be for at least 60 minutes at one of our libraries. Library staff will provide support and all tutoring materials.
- Group Learning: Library staff lead group sessions with the support of volunteer tutors. Group learning consists of literacy classes, workshops, and other learning programs.
