LB Reads
The LB Reads program is temporarily on hold. During this pause, the Library is not accepting applications for LB Reads learners or volunteers. We apologize for the inconvenience.
LB Reads is a 1-on-1 literacy tutoring program that helps adults improve their reading and writing skills so they can reach their potential as workers, family members, community members, and lifelong learners.
According to national and international surveys, approximately 1 in 6 adults in the United States have less than basic literacy skills. That estimate is even higher for Los Angeles County, with approximately 1 in 3 adults struggling with basic literacy skills.
Long Beach Public Library's LB Reads year-round adult literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) programs connect community members with reading tutors to empower them to reach their goals.
Adult Literacy
This program is available to any English-speaking adult who wants help with basic reading and writing. There is no cost. Learners meet with their tutor once or twice a week at a time that works for you.
Literacy goals of this program are unique to each learner, but may include:
- Reading with your children
- Reading the news
- Obtaining a better job
- Registering to vote
- Overcoming literacy challenges
ESL (English as Second Language) @ LBPL
The ESL @ LBPL program is designed to support non-native English Speakers. The program is free and open to all adults who wish to improve their English skills.
LB Reads depends on great tutors like you! If you want to support adults seeking to speak, read, and write English—this is the perfect opportunity for you. No prior teaching experience is required. Please visit our Volunteer Opportunities to check if we are accepting LB Reads tutor applications.
