The North Library Branch first opened in January 1926 at a storefront at 53rd and Long Beach Blvd. After relocating to a few larger sites, the library moved into a brand new building at 5571 Orange in April 1951, where it remained for over 60 years. The library was renamed the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library when it moved to a new 24,655-square-foot, state-of-the-art building on September 10, 2016.
