Safety This Thanksgiving

Release Date: 2020-11-23

California is seeing a record level of new COVID-19 cases at a dangerous rate. Our local hospitals have more than doubled their patients and we broke our city testing record on Friday.

In the last few weeks alone, the data and figures are striking. Here are some of the most concerning indicators.

  • There has been a 248% increase in hospitalizations in our Long Beach area hospitals.
  • Long Beach’s case rate is growing rapidly. Cases are growing faster now than at our peak during the summer months.
  • Currently, the Long Beach positivity rate is 5.8%, when just two weeks ago it was 3%.
  • This past Friday Long Beach broke our testing record, administering more than 2,500 dual COVID-19/flu tests in a single day.

City, LA County, and State public health officials have taken actions to limit non-essential businesses to 25% occupancy, prohibit interactions such as in-person dining and personal services where masks cannot be worn, and closed non-essential businesses between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

We understand these decisions have horrific impacts on workers and small businesses, but we need to ensure that if anyone in your family needs a hospital bed, there is medical staff and room at a local hospital to assist them.

I want to urge everyone to stay home this Thanksgiving and celebrate only with those in your household. By sacrificing this holiday season, it is my hope you will have many more opportunities to celebrate life’s major milestones with your friends and families in the future.

Thank you and stay safe,

Mayor Robert Garcia
