Saving AnimalsRelease Date: 2018-04-05
In 2013, the year before I was elected, we were euthanizing more than 4,000 animals a year at our animal shelter. Since then, we have made progress every single year, and last year we euthanized 1,065 animals at the shelter. We are making progress thanks to our amazing animal rescue & spay/neuter organizations, our animal advocates, the team and volunteers at Animal Care Services, and our City Council.

But we’re not done - we have a lot more work to do, and we won’t stop until every possible life is saved. Every animal life is precious.
We are starting to implement the recommendations of the audit I asked for, and I’ll be appointing a mayoral task force to help us with a new vision for the shelter as recommended by our audit. If you are interested in serving, let me know.
In addition, Animal Care Services has made some great improvements in the last year. This includes ongoing renovations to the cat adoption area, the new mobile adoption unit, the new outdoor play center for dogs, hiring new staff, and much more.
We are looking forward to even more progress this year.
