Welcome Home, Long Beach

Release Date: 2019-08-01

This week was historic for Long Beach as we celebrated the grand opening of our new Civic Center. This new home for our democracy reflects our city's future - it's open, transparent, and sustainable.

Over the coming years and decades, people will come to City Hall for business licenses, building permits for their homes, and even to get married. In our new Bob Foster Civic Chambers, laws will get passed to keep us safe, protect our shared environment and ensure we care for our most vulnerable neighbors.

This Civic Center also brings our Harbor Department next door to the rest of the city government. Having a closer physical connection between the City of Long Beach and its Harbor Department will only help to improve how we function to serve our residents.

I want to thank so many who have been a part of this process over the years, including the Long Beach City Council and the Harbor Commission who have been supportive from day one. I also want to thank former Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and Mayor Bob Foster for helping champion this development. Additionally our development partners, Plenary-Edgemoor Civic Partners, have been vital to making this happen. And a huge thanks to our entire city team for the incredible work to build these iconic buildings.

With the coming grand opening of our new Billie Jean King Main Library next month, a further piece to our vibrant Civic Center will be added. It's an exciting time for our city, and a true pivotal point for downtown Long Beach. I hope you all get a chance soon to see what you all helped make happen, and definitely make sure to take a picture at our "LONG BEACH" signage.
