What's next at the Colorado Lagoon

Release Date: 2019-07-10

I’m excited to share some great news for our city, our environment, and our marine recreation opportunities. Monday night the Long Beach Harbor Commission gave its unanimous approval to provide more than $26 million in funding for the city’s Colorado Lagoon Restoration, which will allow the city to create an open channel from the Lagoon to Marine Stadium.

Long Beach is known for our great parks, including many beautiful places to enjoy our coastal location, and Colorado Lagoon is one of the best. Now, by restoring the channel to the ocean, we will not only improve the environment for marine and coastal life, we will create a new, unique recreational experience for residents and visitors—including the many athletes who train and condition here.

This project would not have been possible without the support of our five Harbor Commissioners and the Port of Long Beach leadership and staff and I want to thank them all for their support. The Port is the greenest in the world and continues to show strong leadership on environmental issues. The Port’s investment of Tidelands dollars, which can only be spent on projects like this, will generate valuable mitigation credits for the Port.

This project has been a priority for me and Councilwoman Suzie Price, who has been an amazing advocate for the restoration project and for expanding recreational facilities and coastal access for our residents. I also want to recognize the Friends of the Colorado Lagoon and other residents who have been working for decades to restore and improve the lagoon and the City’s Tidelands staff who also worked hard to make this possible.

You can read all about the Colorado Lagoon Restoration here.

The project still requires final approval from the City Council, and will take several years to complete. When it’s done, it will truly be a unique and exciting marine recreation resources in California—right here in the heart of our city.
