Women Leading the Way

Release Date: 2018-03-28

Over the last few years, I am proud we have appointed more women and diversified our commissions to ensure representation from across the city. I am committed to appointing even more women to close the gap and ensure women are leading at all levels of government.

In the coming months, I am looking to fill more than 20 open commissioner positions, and I am especially interested in appointing women to key vacancies.

Our City’s commissions serve a very important function. Commissioners have an opportunity to advise City leaders on policies and initiatives related to issues affecting our community—everything from our parks management, to providing services for community members experiencing homelessness, to how we can make our city more sustainable.

Since commissions are such a critical part of our local democracy, it is important they represent the diversity of our community. Currently, our commissions are comprised of about 55% male commissioners and 45% female commissioners. My hope is to continue to increase the number of women serving to historic levels.

The City typically receives less applications from women for commission appointments and we want to change that.

We are searching for qualified applicants to fill current or upcoming vacancies on the following commissions:

  • Airport Advisory Commission
  • Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission
  • Board of Health & Human Services
  • Citizen Police Complaint Commission
  • Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Disabilities
  • Civil Service Commission
  • Commission on Youth and Families
  • Cultural Heritage Commission
  • Homeless Services Advisory Committee
  • Marine Advisory Commission
  • Parks and Recreation Commission
  • Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee
  • Sustainable City Commission
  • Transactions and Use Tax Citizens Advisory Committee
