CYF Ordinance
On October 21, 2003, the Long Beach City Council adopted a resolution forming the City's first Commission on Youth and Families. The Commission is a youth-adult board consisting of seven adults and two youths. The adult commissioners include one Long Beach Unified School Board member. Each youth member has been selected by the City Council member of the district in which he/she resides, and appointed by the Mayor. Youth commissioners must be under the age of 19 at the time of appointment.

Function:
Advises Mayor and City Council on issues relating to the City's provision of services to youth and children; Annually reviews the City's legislative agenda and Education and Youth Strategic Plan.
Membership: (Appointed by Mayor)
- Seven (7) adults preferably with experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas related to youth and family services: social services, health services, job training, education, early childhood development, juvenile justice or safety, and services related to youth and children’s “out of school” activities.
- At least one (1) adult member serving on the LBUSD Board of Education
- Two (2) youth under the age of 19 at time of appointment and selected by the councilmember of the District in which he/she resides.
Officer Election: Every other year in July
Term: 2 years (4 terms max)
