New Jellyfishbot Water Debris-Collecting Device
The jellyfish bot debuted at the 40th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on September 21.
Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Adopt a Beach Program in partnership with the Aquarium of the Pacific, and supported by sponsors Long Beach Container Terminal and Intex Recreation Corporation launched a youth art and naming contest for PRM’s newest piece of debris fighting equipment, the Jellyfishbot.
Youth from surrounding communities are invited to help welcome this cool new critter by designing art to be displayed on the sides, as well as coming up with a name. Applications can be found at www.lbparks.org or link below starting on September 23 through October 25 by clicking on the contest link on the home page. The chosen artist will receive scholarship package, as well as other donations from our sponsors.

- Nets attached to the back of the Jellyfishbot can collect up to 100 pounds of debris in one mission.
- The Jellyfishbot is controlled via remote control, where the operator can use GPS to create a designated operating area.
- Built-in collision avoidance systems detect obstacles above and under water.
- The robot can chart a map of water depths (bathometry) in an operating area and provide a live camera feed.
- The Jellyfishbot will be a valuable tool for the City of Long Beach to use for education and awareness of the larger marine pollution issues.
