Security Services Division Commander

Commander Brian McPhail has been with the Long Beach Police Department for over 25 years and was promoted to the rank of commander on Dec. 3, 2022.

Commander McPhail began his career as a recruit in 1997. He was promoted to sergeant in 2012 and to lieutenant in 2019. Commander McPhail has worked a variety of assignments including Patrol, Investigations, Security Services, and Support Bureau. As a lieutenant, he oversaw the Community Outreach, Response, and Events Section, served in leadership positions on numerous large-scale events, provided mentorship in crowd management response planning, served on the City’s All-Hazards Incident Management Team, and was a leader in the department’s Office of Constitutional Policing.

Commander McPhail holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology, both from Arizona State University. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, P.O.S.T. Management Course, and Leadership Long Beach Institute (Class of 2019). Commander McPhail is deeply connected within the Long Beach community, serving on the Board of Directors for Leadership Long Beach and volunteering with several community organizations and the Long Beach Unified School District.
