On Nov. 29, 2021 at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a park located in the 800 block of E. 7th Street regarding a report of a shooting, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers began performing life-saving measures and requested paramedics. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

On Dec.7, 2021, the victim succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as Omar Akers, a 33-year-old resident of Long Beach experiencing homelessness.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was in the park when an unknown suspect(s) approached him and began shooting. The suspect(s) fled in an unknown direction before officers arrived, and the motive for the shooting is currently unknown. Detectives are actively working to gather additional information to further the ongoing investigation.
