Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish has selected Norma Carrillo and Jeremy Boshnack for promotion to the rank of Commander, effective June 1, 2024, and has announced Command Staff rotations.
“I am pleased to promote Commanders Carrillo and Boshnack as the newest members of our Command Staff,” said Chief of Police Wally Hebeish, “They both have demonstrated a strong commitment to helping others throughout their careers and have continually demonstrated a true passion for service in all of their assignments. I look forward to the great work these two leaders will continue to achieve.”
Commander Norma Carrillo joined the Long Beach Police Department as a police recruit in 2000. She was promoted to sergeant in 2018 and to lieutenant in 2022.
Commander Carrillo has worked a variety of assignments including Field Training Officer, Internal Affairs detective, Sex Crimes detective, Computer Crimes detective, patrol sergeant, Sex Crimes detail sergeant, patrol lieutenant, and the Office of Constitutional Policing lieutenant.
She has played a crucial role in the LBPD’s Peer Support Program, Cadet Program, and Baker to Vegas team, serving as a Vice President and runner throughout her career. Commander Carrillo is also active in the community, participating in various events for the Southern California Special Olympics.
Commander Carrillo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Studies from California State University, Long Beach and is working to complete a Master of Science degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Long Beach program.
Commander Jeremy Boshnack began his career with the Long Beach Department as a police recruit in 2007. He was promoted to sergeant in 2017 and to lieutenant in 2022.
Commander Boshnack has worked a variety of assignments including the Directed Enforcement Team, Coordinated Response Team sergeant, Gun Violence Reduction Team sergeant, Gang Detail sergeant, patrol lieutenant, watch commander, and High Crime Focus Team lieutenant.
Throughout his career, Commander Boshnack has worked to address gun violence in the City of Long Beach. He was awarded Employee of the Year in 2015 for his tenacious fieldwork to reduce violent crime and, since then, has spearheaded numerous projects to take illegal guns off the streets.
Commander Boshnack holds a Master of Arts degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Long Beach. He is a veteran of the US Army, the California Army National Guard, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
Effective June 15, the Department will rotate the following Command Staff positions:
Deputy Chief Gerardo Prieto - Investigations Bureau
Deputy Chief Don Mauk - Patrol Bureau
Commander Greg Brown - West Division (effective July 27, 2024)*
Commander Shaleana Benson - East Division
Commander Scott Jenson - Detective Division (effective July 27, 2024)*
Commander Norma Carrillo – Training and Tactical Support Division (effective July 27, 2024)*
Commander Jeremy Boshnack – Collaborative Response Division
