On Thursday, March 3, 2016, at approximately 3:05 p.m., Long Beach Police were dispatched to the area of Butler Avenue and Artesia Boulevard regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call, which resulted in the death of one male adult, and the injuring of another.

When officers arrived, they discovered a shooting had occurred and two male adults had sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a local hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics. One victim who had been struck in the torso was determined deceased shortly thereafter. The second victim was struck in the lower body, and the injury appeared to be non-life threatening.

The preliminary investigation has determined the victims were standing on the street near Butler Avenue and Artesia Boulevard with a group of male subjects, when an unknown male subject walked up to the group and opened fire, striking the two victims. The incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related.

The deceased victim’s identity will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. The second victim is an 18-year-old resident of Long Beach.
