Homicide detectives have made an arrest related to the fatal shooting that occurred on July 23, 2024.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., officers responded to the 5900 block of Lime Avenue regarding multiple gunshots heard and a person who was shot inside of his garage.
Upon arrival, officers located a male adult victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers rendered medical aid and attempted life saving measures until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. The victim was determined deceased at the scene.
Homicide Detectives responded to the scene. Through their preliminary investigation, detectives believe the suspect and victim were together when the suspect shot the victim. Detectives determined the victim and the suspect were previously known to one another. The investigation to determine the circumstances and motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Through their investigation, Homicide detectives identified the suspect as Mathew De Diego, a 19-year-old resident of Long Beach. He was located near the 5000 block of Gardenia Avenue by Special Investigations Division detectives, arrested, and transported to Long Beach City Jail where he was booked for murder. His bail was set at $3,000,000.
“In less than seven hours, LBPD personnel identified and safely arrested this violent murder suspect, once again demonstrating the focus we will maintain on capturing those willing to victimize others,” said Chief of Police Wally Hebeish. “We do not tolerate gun violence in our community. Our detectives, officers, and professional staff are working around the clock to keep our city safe."
The decedent has been identified as Jeffrey Poorman, a 44-year-old resident of the city of Long Beach.
The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this week for filing consideration.
Detectives believe there were additional witnesses in the area and are encouraging them to come forward.
