Collision Investigation detectives are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on Oct. 6, 2025, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
At approximately 7:53 p.m., officers responded to East 4th Street and Bonito Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers located the male adult bicyclist unconscious in the roadway. Officers and a bystander rendered aid, until paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived. Paramedics transported the male to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition. On Oct. 24, 2025, detectives received notification from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner that the adult male succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 20, 2025.
The preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist was riding his bicycle east on 4th Street in a shared bicycle lane. The bicyclist attempted to make a northbound turn onto Bonito Avenue when he was struck by a 2021 BMW 330i, driven by Ahkeyajahnique Owens, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was travelling eastbound on 4th Street at a high rate of speed. The driver remained at the scene and was arrested for reckless driving.
At this time, speed is being considered as a contributing factor in the collision.
The decedent is identified as Raul Augustin Gallopa, a 35-year-old resident of Long Beach.
