On Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at 10:50 a.m., Long Beach Police responded to East Willow Street and Nipomo Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision. When officers arrived, they discovered a 2007 BMW 530i had collided with a tree and an unoccupied parked vehicle.
The preliminary investigation indicated the BMW, being driven by a 48-year-old male resident of Long Beach, was traveling eastbound on Willow Street. Witnesses indicated the vehicle was traveling normally, when suddenly it accelerated at a high rate of speed and crossed over the raised median just east of Josie Avenue. The vehicle continued east and traveled a short distance, eastbound in the westbound lanes, until it went over the north curb of the Willow Street median separating the service road on the north side. Once on the median, the vehicle collided with a medium sized tree, uprooting it, and went on to collide into a utility truck.
After the collision, the driver appeared to be unconscious in the vehicle. Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics responded, removed the driver from the vehicle, performed CPR, and pronounced the driver deceased at the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner will determine the official cause of death.
At this time, the driver is not being identified pending notification of next of kin.
