On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at approximately 1:07 a.m., Long Beach Police were dispatched to the area of the southbound 710 Freeway north of the 6th Street on-ramp regarding an injury traffic collision. Arriving officers located a 2006 Toyota Scion that had traveled off the Shoemaker Bridge and landed on the southbound 710 Freeway as it transitions to Terminal Island. Long Beach Fire Department personnel extricated a male adult occupant and transported him, in critical condition, to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Another male adult occupant of the Toyota was later discovered in the area of the collision. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His involvement in the collision is unclear and remains under investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicated the Toyota was traveling southbound the 710 Freeway approaching the Shoemaker Bridge/Terminal Island split when, for an unknown reason, it lost control and traveled off the Shoemaker Bridge and landed on the 710 Freeway transition to Terminal Island.
Detectives believe the Toyota may have made contact with a Ford Escape prior to traveling off the Shoemaker Bridge. The vehicle is described as a silver 2006 Ford Escape, California license plate 5MOV326.
At this time, the deceased occupant is not being identified pending notification of next of kin.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information regarding the Ford Escape is asked to call Detective Sirilo Garcia of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7110.
