Office of Police Oversight
The Office of Police Oversight’s (OPO) role within the City of Long Beach is to audit all investigations completed by the Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) Internal Affairs Division (IAD) for timeliness, thoroughness, and quality; review IAD’s intake of complaints to ensure appropriate allegations are included in IAD’s investigation; prepare annual reports with a focus on statistical trends and special reports and provide such reports to the Police Oversight Commission (POC) and City Council.
The OPO is separate and independent from the LBPD. Among other duties, has the authority to review Police Department operations, policy, procedures and training and make recommendations to the POC and City Council. The OPO Director has the authority to be on the scene of critical incidents to observe the Police Department’s handling of critical incident investigations.
If would like to file a complaint against a member of the Long Beach Police Department, you can download a complaint form on the LBPD website and email Internal.Affairs@longbeach.gov, call the Internal Affairs Division at 562.570.7343, or call the LBPD main line at 562.570.7236.
