Long Beach, CA– This May, the City of Long Beach invites residents, local businesses and design and construction professionals to join the citywide celebration of National Home Improvement Month, an inaugural initiative themed Love Where You Live. Led by the Community Development Department, this month-long campaign highlights the vital role of design, renovation and community pride in shaping the neighborhoods that make Long Beach a place the community is proud to call home.
"Our homes are more than buildings—they are the foundation of our families, our memories and our neighborhoods," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "Home Improvement Month is a celebration of the shared commitment to nurturing these spaces and investing in a stronger, more beautiful Long Beach for generations to come. When we care for our homes, we care for our community."
Throughout May, residents are invited to engage in a variety of activities designed to educate, inspire and connect. The Resident Spotlight series is a key feature of the campaign, which invites homeowners and renters to share photos and stories of their home improvement journeys, from full renovations to weekend DIYs. Submissions will be accepted throughout the month, and selected entries will be featured on Citywide platforms to showcase the personal pride and neighborhood character that make Long Beach unique. Submit your project at lbcity.info/nhim-spotlights.
“This program is about giving residents the tools, resources and connections they need to make lasting improvements to their homes,” said Christopher Koontz, Director of Long Beach Community Development. “By investing in homes and neighborhoods, we’re strengthening the entire community — and we’re proud to be part of that work.”
Complementing the spotlight series is a robust social media campaign offering practical home improvement tips, helpful City resources and ideas to inspire residents in making meaningful upgrades to their living spaces. Follow @LongBeachBuilds on Facebook, X and Instagram.
The month-long celebration wraps up with a free, family-friendly Home Improvement Expo on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whaley Park (5620 Atherton St.). Open to the whole community, this free, interactive event will feature live demonstrations, hands-on activities, giveaways and a wide range of resources for both homeowners and renters. Residents will have the opportunity to connect with local vendors, City departments and home improvement professionals to explore ideas, tools and strategies for creating stronger, more sustainable homes.
The City invites local businesses, design experts and contractors to participate by exhibiting at the Expo or sharing resources that empower residents to take the next step in their home improvement journey. Interested partners can sign up through Sunday, May 18, 2025, at lbcity.info/nihm-partnerships.
From first-time DIYers to seasoned pros, Home Improvement Month is a celebration of shared knowledge, neighborhood pride and the collective effort to beautify and strengthen Long Beach.
